Auto insurance basics

Accidents happen to even the most careful drivers. That's why auto insurance coverage is so important.

Depending on the options you choose, auto insurance can cover:

  • Physical injuries to yourself and others (in the event of an accident)
  • Legal liability (covering youself, family members and others)
  • Theft
  • Vehicle damage
  • Vandalism

All B.C. motorists must have basic Autoplan coverage. It provides you with the minimum insurance coverage required by law. Additional coverage is available from Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC), or a private insurance company.

Basic Autoplan coverage

Third party legal liability Covers you if you are found responsible for causing damages or injuries to other people in a crash, up to a limit of $200,000.
Accident benefits Pays medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, wage loss or death benefits if you, your family or the occupants of your vehicle are injured or killed in a crash, no matter who is at fault.
Underinsured motorist protection Provides coverage of up to $1 million dollars per person if you or your passengers are injured or killed and the motorist at fault doesn't have enough insurance to pay for your claims. You and your household members are covered when you are pedestrians, cyclists or passengers in another vehicle.
Hit and run and uninsured motorist Pays damages of up to $200,000 if you are injured or killed by a hit-and-run or uninsured motorist.
Inverse liability coverage Covers you in the parts of Canada and the U.S. where the law won't allow you to recover losses from a driver who causes a crash. If you are in a crash in one of these areas, Basic Autoplan will pay the cost of repairs to your vehicle, as much as the other driver was responsible. So if another driver was 75% at fault for a crash that happened where you can't sue, Inverse Liability will pay 75% of the cost of repairs to your car.

NOTE: Basic Autoplan does not cover repairs to your vehicle or its replacement, or many other risks covered by optional insurance.

How much does it cost?

In general, several things contribute to the cost of auto insurance.

  • How you use your vehicle (business, pleasure etc.)
  • Where you live
  • Your claim record
  • The vehicle you drive
  • What type and how much additional coverage you choose
