Helpful safety tips to remember

  • Always protect your personal information including your bank account, credit card and Social Insurance numbers
  • Do NOT participate if you are offered a prize or gift, but have to first send money to collect it or call a 900 number
  • Destroy correspondence you receive with personal and financial information on it
  • Destroy (shred) any pre-authorized credit card applications you receive in the mail
  • Question soliciting, door-to-door charities. Ask for their organization's registration number
  • When at an ATM or an INTERAC Direct Payment terminal, shield the number pad so others do not have access to your Personal Identification Number (PIN)

Special hints for seniors

It's essential to protect yourself and your belongings. Remember to practice these helpful tips:

  • When giving power of attorney or making Representation Agreements, remember you can revoke them.
  • When co-signing a loan, ask yourself is youcan you afford to pay it off if the other person defaults?
  • Read documents carefully when changing to a joint bank account or sharing ownership of real estate.
  • Remember when deferring taxes that the interest compounds
  • Do your homework when buying a condo. (Are there any extra charges? i.e maintenace charges)
  • Do NOT give someone access to your safety deposit box or bank account. Keep the key in a safe place and keep your PIN (Personal Identification Number) private.
  • Never give credit card numbers over the phone if you did not place the call.
  • Keep a record of credit card numbers in case of loss.
  • Always check any monthly statements.
  • Avoid keeping cash at home; it's an invitation for theft.
